Aqaba Authority Holds Consultative Session to Review Environmental Impact Assessment Study for "Al-Durra" Project

The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority held, on Thursday, the second consultative session to review the comprehensive environmental impact assessment study for the rehabilitation and expansion project of Al-Durra Border Center, with the participation of representatives from government agencies, concerned institutions, local community organizations, the private sector, and a number of those interested in environmental and developmental affairs.

The session was opened by Engineer Iman Al-Kouz, Head of the Approvals and Environmental Impact Assessment Division at the Authority, affirming the importance of consulting with relevant parties and involving stakeholders in the preparation and review stages of environmental impact assessment studies, thereby enhancing transparency, supporting sustainable development principles, and ensuring that environmental considerations are taken into account during the planning and implementation stages of development projects.

The session reviewed the main findings of the environmental impact assessment study for the project, including the environmental, social, and economic aspects associated with the rehabilitation and expansion works, as well as the preventive measures and proposed environmental management plans to mitigate potential environmental impacts during the construction and operation phases.

The project aims to rehabilitate and expand the Al-Durra Border Center, develop its facilities and infrastructure, to keep pace with the expected growth in passenger traffic and cargo, enhance the efficiency of services provided at the border center, and support economic and commercial movement between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The session allowed participants to provide their observations, inquiries, and suggestions regarding the study and its outputs, where a number of issues related to the project were discussed, most notably public health, occupational safety, waste management, water sources, and traffic and social aspects.

The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority confirmed that the observations and recommendations raised during the consultative session will be taken into account in the final review of the study, ensuring compliance with the applicable environmental requirements and standards, the application of best environmental practices, and in line with the Authority's approach to supporting sustainable development projects and preserving the environment in the region.

The rehabilitation and expansion project of Al-Durra Border Center is one of the strategic projects aimed at developing the infrastructure of border crossings, enhancing the efficiency of services provided to passengers and cargo traffic, thereby supporting economic and commercial movement and strengthening cooperation between Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
