»Aqaba Economic Zone« Launches a Participatory Model for Rehabilitating Wadi Rum Village

The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority is moving towards establishing a participatory development model in Wadi Rum Village, based on involving local community members in identifying the needs of their village and contributing to the implementation of its rehabilitation projects, transforming development from projects executed for the locals into works in which the region's residents participate in building and developing.

In this context, the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, Shadi Al-Majali, and the members of the Board, during a field visit to Rum Village, inspected the status of services and rehabilitation and development projects being implemented by the Authority in partnership with the local community, emphasizing the importance of enhancing the role of the region's residents in formulating priorities and contributing to the development of their village and preserving its urban and tourist specificity.

The Board met with a number of locals, notables, elders, youth, and representatives of the local community at the Rum Village Services Center, listening to their observations, needs, and the challenges they face, in a meeting characterized by direct dialogue and proposing practical solutions, enhancing the partnership between the Authority and the local community and turning demands into tangible projects and works on the ground.

The Board reviewed the works of rehabilitating the village's infrastructure, which included repaving the main and secondary streets between houses, organizing electricity and water networks, along with rehabilitating sidewalks and walls, contributing to improving the level of services while preserving the distinctive urban and heritage character of Rum Village. In the aspect most closely related to local empowerment, the Board inspected the training workshops dedicated to rebuilding sidewalks and walls, which allow the residents of Rum Village to acquire practical skills and participate in implementing the rehabilitation works themselves, a step reflecting a trend towards linking infrastructure projects with training and job opportunities, and reinforcing the concept that the village's residents are partners in its construction, not just beneficiaries of its projects.

Several members of the local community expressed their appreciation for the direct communication with the Board of Commissioners, confirming that listening to their observations and discussing challenges directly contributed to reaching practical solutions and achieving tangible results, praising the partnership with the Aqaba Authority and the role of tourism and cooperative associations in supporting local development and enhancing the participation of the locals.

In the context of raising the level of service readiness in the region, the Board reviewed the equipment and mechanisms that were supplied to the Rum Village Services Center, including a grader and an agricultural tractor, to provide daily services and support emergency work, along with other mechanisms that are being worked on to be supplied, enhancing the technical and logistical capabilities of the center, especially with the approach of winter.
