Secretary-General of the Water Authority, Engineer Sufian Al-Batayneh, confirmed that drilling operations for the exploratory and production water well currently being implemented within the Yarmouk University campus have so far reached a depth of 600 meters, out of the target depth of 1,100 meters.
Al-Batayneh pointed out that this well is being implemented in cooperation and partnership between the university and the Water Authority, and is funded by the Ministry of Water and Irrigation at a cost of approximately 300,000 dinars.
Al-Batayneh explained that the ongoing work is being carried out according to the highest approved engineering and environmental standards, noting that hydrogeological and geological studies of the earth's strata indicate the expectation of reaching large and promising quantities of groundwater upon reaching the targeted technical depths.
He highlighted the Water Authority's keenness to provide technical and logistical support to academic and educational institutions, in a way that enhances the efficiency of water resource management and optimal utilization of groundwater sources, noting that the project provides a free field training space for students of related disciplines, which contributes to linking academic education outcomes with labor market requirements, in addition to the importance of geological data resulting from drilling operations in enriching scientific research and studying and evaluating aquifers.
For his part, President of Yarmouk University, Dr. Malik Al-Sharairi, confirmed that the implementation of this project comes within the framework of cooperation between the university and the Water Authority, and reflects the importance of partnership between national institutions in implementing projects that serve the university and the local community, noting "Yarmouk's" keenness to employ national capabilities and expertise in implementing sustainable projects.
He explained that this step aims to enhance the university's water security and provide self-sustaining sources for water supply, thus marking a pivotal milestone that combines meeting the university's service needs with supporting the academic and research journey of its students.
Al-Sharairi added that drilling this well comes at a vital location on the university campus, given the university's location in the heart of Irbid and the lack of a previous water well in the area, as a vital step to secure water needs, in addition to being a scientific incentive to search for future water points.
He pointed out that in parallel with the service aspect of the project, its academic and training aspect stands out through involving students of the Faculty of Science and the Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology, training them in the field at the work site, and applying geological and water knowledge practically by identifying the nature of the layers being drilled and their topography, which contributes to developing their practical skills and qualifying them for the labor market through direct exposure to the project's implementation stages.
