Al-Azzam: Jordan possesses the foundations to enhance its role as a regional hub in the energy sector

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engineer Amani Al-Azzam, emphasized the importance of enhancing regional integration and interconnection in the energy sector, which contributes to diversifying supply sources and routes, and strengthening energy security and the resilience of its systems in the face of supply disruptions.

This came during Al-Azzam's participation in the high-level strategic event "Accelerating the Eastern Mediterranean as an Energy Corridor – From Dialogue to Realizing the Corridor," held in the Greek capital, Athens, and hosted by Hellenic Energy.

During the first session titled "Corridor Engineering – Structuring the Energy System," Al-Azzam stated that successful energy corridors must provide countries with real options to access multiple sources through various routes, thereby limiting reliance on a single source or route and enhancing the ability to respond to variables and supply disruptions.

She stressed the priority of maximizing the utilization of existing infrastructure and identifying missing strategic links that allow access to additional sources and markets, noting the importance of balancing regional integration efficiency with national energy security requirements, and providing reliable alternatives that enhance supply continuity when disruptions occur.

She pointed out that gas networks and electrical interconnection can play complementary roles, whereby energy needs are identified first, and then the most technically and economically feasible solution is chosen, whether through gas infrastructure, electrical interconnection, or developing existing infrastructure.

Al-Azzam said that Jordan possesses the foundations to enhance its role as a regional hub, primarily its strategic geographical location, political stability, and a clear and stable legislative and regulatory environment, in addition to existing gas and electrical interconnection infrastructure, which enhances opportunities for connection with broader sources and markets in the region.

She called for a clear and actionable regional investment roadmap that identifies priority links and directs investments toward the most feasible and bankable projects, emphasizing the need to move from identifying potential opportunities and projects to prioritizing and transforming energy corridors into practical projects on the ground.
