The African Union Commission called on Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt to exercise the utmost restraint and refrain from any actions or statements that could increase tension and undermine regional peace and stability.
The Commission said in a statement that it urges the three countries to resolve their differences through the approved diplomatic channels and peaceful dialogue.
On Thursday, Ethiopia ordered the closure of its embassy in Eritrea and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats personae non gratae, prompting Asmara to sever all diplomatic ties with its neighbor.
Ethiopia also declared an Egyptian diplomat persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country within 48 hours. In response, Cairo reciprocated by declaring the Ethiopian embassy advisor persona non grata and gave him 48 hours to leave the country.
