UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep concern at dawn today regarding the renewed fighting in the Tigray, Afar, and Amhara regions of Ethiopia.
According to a press statement, Guterres called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, warning of the risks of escalation that further undermine the stability of the region. He also expressed his concern over reports of Eritrean forces inside Ethiopia.
Guterres reminded all countries in the region of their obligations under the UN Charter to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, and to adhere to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs.
He called on all countries with influence over the parties to use that influence to support de-escalation and refrain from any action that might fuel the conflict, affirming his readiness to offer his good offices.
