A Project to Enhance Energy Efficiency and Reduce Electricity Costs in Ghor Al-Mazraa and Southern Jordan Valley Municipalities

The Municipality of Ghor Al-Mazraa and the Municipality of Al-Aghwar Southern signed an agreement to implement a solar energy project as part of the Sustainable Economic Development and Energy in Jordan – Phase 2 (SEED 2), which includes the establishment and operation of two independent solar systems at a joint site, with a total capacity of 950 kilowatts.

According to the agreement, the share of the Municipality of Ghor Al-Mazraa in the project is 380 kilowatts, while the share of the Municipality of Al-Aghwar Southern is 570 kilowatts, which contributes to enhancing the benefit of the two municipalities from renewable energy sources and providing part of their electricity needs.

The President of the Ghor Al-Mazraa Municipal Committee, Engineer Hussam Al-Karki, said that the implementation of the project represents an important step in the direction of municipalities to reduce operational expenses and enhance the efficiency of energy use, explaining that the high cost of electricity is one of the items that depletes part of the municipalities' budgets, which makes investing in renewable energy projects a practical and sustainable option.

Al-Karki added, on his behalf, that the project will achieve financial savings on the electricity bill, and direct the savings achieved towards improving the level of services provided to citizens and implementing priority development and service projects, stressing the importance of partnership with supporting parties in providing sustainable solutions that contribute to enhancing the ability of municipalities to perform their duties.

He pointed out that the establishment of the two solar systems at a joint site reflects the importance of integration and cooperation between municipalities, and the optimal use of projects that aim to support the transition to clean energy, in line with national directions in the field of renewable energy and sustainability.

The two municipalities expressed their appreciation to the supporting and partner parties in the implementation of the project, led by the Government of Canada, the SEED 2 project, and Cowater International, for their role in supporting sustainable energy projects and enhancing the ability of municipalities to face financial and operational challenges.

It is expected that the project, after its operation, will contribute to reducing dependence on conventional electricity and reducing the expenses associated with it, in addition to enhancing the concept of environmental sustainability and expanding the use of solar energy in municipal work, which will reflect on the efficiency and sustainability of services in the long term.
