The Director of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the Northern Region/Irbid Governorate, Ahmed Al-Khasawneh, confirmed the existence of this suffering and the difficult reality faced by wheelchair users in the area as a result of the absence of appropriate environmental preparation.
Al-Khasawneh explained that the Council is always keen to allocate funds within the Irbid Governorate Council (decentralization) allocations to address these obstacles, noting that 50,000 dinars have been allocated to the Bani Obeid Municipality from these allocations to construct dedicated ramps on Prince Hassan Street and vital places, with the aim of facilitating their movement and ensuring their safety.
Al-Khasawneh added that the Higher Council continues its comprehensive follow-up with all institutions and municipalities to verify compliance with building codes for people with disabilities, stressing that partnership with governorate and municipal councils is the main pillar for providing an inclusive environment that guarantees the right of wheelchair users to safe access to all public facilities and streets without obstacles.
For her part, the Director of Tenders at Bani Obeid Municipality, Engineer Rula Masad, confirmed that the municipality is in the process of floating the tender worth 50,000 dinars to construct and rehabilitate ramps for wheelchair users, in cooperation with the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities according to approved technical and engineering specifications.
Engineer Masad pointed out that this issue is at the top of the priorities of the Bani Obeid Municipality to facilitate the affairs of citizens and students who use wheelchairs, and to provide a safe environment that ensures the ease of their movement in various areas of the district.
Masad indicated that the engineering and technical staff in the municipality conducted a comprehensive field survey of the most vital and crowded points, especially the streets surrounding universities and service departments, to ensure the implementation of ramps with standard slopes and safe measurements that prevent slipping and allow wheelchairs to ascend and descend with ease.
For his part, Mohammed, a wheelchair user in the area, expressed his optimism about this step, hoping for the continuation and sustainability of this interest to include all main and secondary streets and service institutions in the district.
He praised the tangible steps and measures taken by the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in cooperation with local authorities, while valuing the government instructions and directives that emphasize respect for the rights of people with disabilities and the necessity of integrating them into society and providing appropriate infrastructure that preserves their dignity and ensures their safety while moving.
