This season, Mafraq Governorate is heading to record a bountiful grape harvest, amid the expansion of cultivated areas and improved production levels, enhancing the governorate's presence as one of the important agricultural regions in the Kingdom in the field of grape cultivation and production.
The director of the Mafraq Governorate Agriculture Directorate, Dr. Inam Al-Mashabaqah, said that the areas planted with grapes in various regions of the governorate amount to about 24 thousand dunams, while preliminary estimates indicate that the expected production during the current season will reach about 60 thousand tons.
Al-Mashabaqah added that these figures reflect the importance of the grape cultivation sector in the governorate, and what it represents as a source of production and income for a large number of farmers, alongside its role in stimulating the agricultural and commercial movement linked to the crop, starting from production operations to marketing.
She pointed out that Mafraq Governorate enjoys vast agricultural areas and a suitable environment for cultivating a number of crops, which has contributed to the diversification of agricultural production in it, especially crops that constitute an economic value for farmers and meet part of the needs of local markets.
She explained that the increase in the expected volume of grape production requires enhancing efforts related to marketing, which helps farmers to dispose of their production and achieve appropriate economic returns, and limits the losses that may result from weak marketing channels or crop congestion during the peak of the season.
Grape crop is one of the crops that is receiving increasing attention from farmers in Mafraq Governorate, amid the need to develop production, packaging, storage, and marketing methods, in order to increase the added value of the agricultural product and open wider opportunities for its access to markets.
The former director of the Agricultural Research Center in Mafraq, Dr. Muhammad Abu Dalbouh, pointed out that the figures of areas and expected production confirm the importance of the agricultural sector in the Kingdom's economy, and the necessity of continuing to support farmers and provide them with agricultural and technical guidance, alongside working to create more effective markets and marketing channels, in order to ensure the optimal use of production and enhance the competitiveness of local products.
He stressed that with the start of the grape season, the attention of farmers and producers is directed towards the markets, amid hopes that the expected production volume will positively reflect on the agricultural and commercial activity in the governorate, and that the season will be an opportunity to enhance farmers' income and drive the wheel of the local economy.
