19 Killed in Floods and Landslides in India and Nepal

Authorities reported that heavy rains and storms led to flooding and landslides in parts of India and neighboring Nepal, resulting in the death of at least 19 people, 10 workers missing, and river levels exceeding danger levels.

In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, authorities stated in a statement issued on Saturday that 15 people were killed and five others injured over the past 48 hours, while 117 homes were damaged.

Heavy rains and storms affected 63 districts, with the state recording 19 times the usual daily rainfall in the 24 hours until Saturday.

In Nepal, 4 people were killed, including 3 children and a woman, after a landslide buried their home while they were sleeping in the village of Nishi Khola in the Bajloong region, according to Krishna Prasad Acharya, the region's top administrative official.

Officials concerned with mountain trekking trips said 10 Nepalese workers were missing after an avalanche buried the base camp on Mount Himlung Himal, which stands at 7,126 meters and is located in the northern Manang region. The workers were setting up tents for foreign climbers, who were not present when the avalanche occurred.

Nepali authorities warned of the possibility of flash floods in 49 out of 77 districts in the country, with more than half facing high risks of flooding or flash floods as water levels in major rivers and tributaries continue to rise.
