Death toll from heavy rains in Istanbul rises to 5

The death toll from the heavy rains and floods that have been hitting the Turkish city of Istanbul since last Wednesday has risen to five, while two people remain missing, according to the city governor's office.

The office stated that search teams found, on Sunday, the body of Murad Babaganov, who went missing following the floods in the Kağıthane district last Wednesday. The Turkish channel "NTV" reported that the victim was 30 years old and held Turkmen citizenship.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said that two people are still missing, noting that the heavy rains, which intensified on Saturday night and Sunday, caused new floods in the Pendik district of Istanbul and the neighboring city of Kocaeli, in northwestern Turkey.

In a separate incident in the city of Gebze, part of Kocaeli, floods swept away a car carrying three people; one survived, the body of another was found, and the third remains missing.

Gül confirmed that conditions have begun to improve as the rain stopped, noting that the critical phase has been passed and evacuation operations are nearing completion, with expectations for life to return to normal.
