16 dead and 32 injured in China earthquake

16 people were killed and 32 others were injured as a result of a 7-magnitude earthquake that struck the remote Tibet region, according to the official Xinhua News Agency early Friday, citing local officials.

The agency stated that more than 300 houses collapsed as a result of the earthquake, which occurred on Thursday at 10:33 PM (14:33 GMT).

It added that officials are still working to assess the damage, while relief efforts continue in the aftermath of the disaster.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 190 kilometers east-northeast of Nagchu, and 390 kilometers northeast of the regional capital, Lhasa.

It struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

Xinhua had reported that the China Earthquake Administration activated a level-two emergency response.

Earthquakes frequently strike China.

In January 2025, at least 126 people were killed in an earthquake that struck the rural Tingri County in Tibet.
