French national team captain Kylian Mbappe, who suffered a knee injury during the UEFA Nations League match against Turkey, will leave his country's training camp "to avoid any risk," according to coach Zinedine Zidane on the "TF1" channel.
Responding to a question about the Real Madrid forward's exit immediately after scoring the opening goal in the 54th minute, "Zizou" said: "Things don't look good, unfortunately." He added: "I think he will have to return," before the channel's journalist asked him again: "So Kylian Mbappe's camp is over?" Zidane replied: "Yes, because we will not take any risks. He suffered a hyperextension of the knee."
The French Football Federation subsequently confirmed that Mbappe, who is "suffering from a tendon injury," will return to Madrid to receive treatment.
The new French national team coach had explained that the Real Madrid striker was injured "during the shot" that resulted in the winning goal against Turkey.
Zidane reiterated: "The signs are not entirely encouraging for him to continue. We will not take any risks."
When scoring the goal in the 54th minute, Mbappe received a pass from Michael Olise, shot with his right foot, and managed to deceive Turkish goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, scoring his 67th international goal.
However, the top scorer in the history of the French national team did not celebrate the goal, as he began to limp immediately before lying on the pitch, placing his hand on the back of his left knee, while signs of pain were clearly visible on his face.
He tried to continue playing for a while before being forced to give up completely in the 59th minute. After being replaced by Desire Doue, Mbappe headed straight to the dressing rooms while still limping slightly, following a quick and friendly handshake with his coach Zinedine Zidane.
In the first match of the Zidane era, France defeated Turkey 1-0, and they have three more Nations League matches awaiting them within ten days, starting with a visit to Belgium on Monday, followed by hosting Italy and Belgium at the "Stade de France" on October 2nd and 5th.
