The captain of the French national football team, Kylian Mbappe, expressed his delight at meeting again with Zinedine Zidane, the new coach of the "Blues", 15 years after his trial with "Zizou" in the youth categories of Real Madrid.
The French star said in an interview with the Madrid newspaper "AS": "Years have passed since then, Zidane was the first to come to meet me and took me to the training center of the royal club. I was 13 or 14 years old. It seems like an entire era has passed on this matter".
He added: "Today he is my coach in the national team. It seems like a movie".
Before joining his team's gathering in Clairefontaine, the former Paris Saint-Germain star continued: "It's great, and it's tangible: we are starting a new phase in France (the national team), and we have two years to prepare for the European Cup, and that's what we will dedicate ourselves to".
When asked about this new era (with Zidane), the all-time top scorer of the two-time world champion acknowledged that it might be a "change for everyone", as the current national team lineup has only experienced "Didier Deschamps" so far.
After Real's loss to Atletico Madrid (1-2), Mbappe refused to engage in a debate about refereeing but pointed to "mistakes" that affected the course of the match.
The Real Madrid striker explained: "It's a step back, that's for sure. It's a loss that is hard to accept. We wanted to win, and we were aware of the type of match we would face... but the team gave everything they had, and we must continue moving forward because the season is still long, and we must stay on the right track".
The top scorer of the 2026 World Cup in Spain, where he plays for the third season, faces criticism for his weak defensive support.
He acknowledged that Real Madrid players must "do other things" and "work" to "bring back smiles to Real Madrid" and "win trophies again", after two years without major titles.
