Washington calls on its citizens to exercise "heightened vigilance" following attacks on Riyadh airport

The United States called on its citizens on Thursday to "exercise heightened vigilance" following missile attacks launched by the Houthis targeting Riyadh airport, which US government employees are now required to obtain special permission to use.

The US Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs stated on the X platform that "the US Mission is aware of the attacks that targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as of October 8, and reminds all US citizens of the need to exercise heightened vigilance."

It added that "US government employees working in Saudi Arabia are now required to obtain special permission to use" the airport.

King Khalid International Airport called on travelers on Thursday to "check the status of their flights" with airlines before heading to the airport, a day after the attack and in light of the Houthis' renewed announcement of targeting it.

The airport said in a post on the X platform, "We would like to inform travelers of the need to communicate directly with airlines and check the flight status before heading to the airport."

Travelers reported that their flights were canceled or postponed, without the airport clarifying the number of affected flights.

The Saudi-led coalition, part of the "Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen," had announced earlier on Thursday the interception and destruction of three ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi group towards Saudi territory.

The official spokesman for the Coalition Forces, Brigadier General Turki Al-Maliki, said that the coalition forces intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched towards Khamis Mushait, while they intercepted and destroyed two other ballistic missiles launched towards the capital, Riyadh.

These developments come a day after an attack targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which, according to Saudi authorities, resulted in the death of one person inside the airport premises.
