UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell concluded a two-day visit to Jordan on Tuesday, during which she praised the significant progress Jordan has made in the field of children's rights, calling for continued support to maintain this progress amid declining funding.
Russell said that Jordan is achieving remarkable results for children, affirming that UNICEF will continue to support the government's efforts to transform school enrollment into quality learning and future employment opportunities.
During the visit, Russell met with children at a community center affiliated with the Jordan River Foundation, where the organization collaborates with the Jordan River Foundation to provide learning, protection, and support services for the most vulnerable children.
She also met with the Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Dr. Azmi Mahafza, and the Minister of Social Development, Wafa Bani Mustafa, to discuss the needs of children in Jordan.
She highlighted the strong national strategies that Jordan is implementing for the benefit of children, including strategies related to social protection, child protection, and youth support, affirming UNICEF's commitment to working alongside the government to translate these strategies into sustainable improvements.
It should be noted that all children in Jordan are enrolled in basic education, and the Child Rights Law of 2022 has defined their rights in national legislation.
UNICEF emphasized that declining funding affects the ability to provide essential services to the most vulnerable children in Jordan, calling on donors to continue their support through flexible and multi-year funding that strengthens national systems for the benefit of every child.
Jordan has shown exceptional generosity in hosting Syrian refugees, with the number of refugees reaching 1.3 million at the height of the Syrian conflict. Thousands have returned, but large numbers remain in Jordan and need continued support from the international community.
