US President Donald Trump announced on Monday plans to build what he described as the largest steel plant in US history in the state of Iowa, which is pivotal in the upcoming midterm elections in November.
Trump aims to boost his Republican Party's chances amid growing voter discontent over living costs and the ongoing war with Iran with his announcement of the $15 billion project.
From the Oval Office, Trump said, "We are pleased today to announce that Mesabi Metallurgics will build the largest steel plant in American history in the great state of Iowa"
The White House reported that the cost of the plant will be $15 billion, and it will use iron ore extracted from the company's new mine in Minnesota, which he said is the first mine to open in the United States in 50 years.
Trump won Iowa by a comfortable margin in the 2024 presidential election, but Republican Senate candidate Ashley Henson currently lags behind her Democratic opponent in opinion polls.
The Republicans face the risk of losing control of one or both houses of Congress, which could hinder Trump's legislative agenda and expose him to the risk of facing impeachment for the third time.
