«Training on Freedom»: A play exploring the relationship between freedom and responsibility

The play «Training on Freedom», which was presented as part of the activities of the Jordanian Professional Theatre Festival, opens up a space to question the concept of individual freedom and the limits of authority through a theatrical treatment that places human beings before their choices in light of the restrictions and pressures imposed upon them.

The events of the play revolve around four people who find themselves in an enclosed space, subjected to the instructions of an unknown entity that communicates with them via a voice imposing mysterious procedures upon them. Events then develop in a context that reveals the tension between the individual's desire to make decisions and attempts to subject them to a system that controls their behavior and choices.

Through this dramatic space, the play addresses the impact of fear and compliance on individual behavior, and what pressures can lead to conflicts within the same group, opening the door to contemplation on the relationship between freedom and responsibility, and between responding to restrictions and attempting to overcome them.

This treatment falls within the themes from which the theatre draws its human and social questions, as the relationship between the individual and authority allows for multiple approaches to the concept of freedom, describing it as a right to choose and think, and a responsibility linked to the consequences resulting from decisions.

The play is written by Hani Al-Khalidi, based on an idea by Firas Zaqtan, with direction and scenography by Firas Al-Masri, while the music and melodies were composed by Abdul-Razzaq Matriya, and the acting cast included Tariq Al-Tamimi, Salsabila, Nagham Battarisa, and Ahmed Al-Jizawi.

The Jordanian Professional Theatre Festival continues to present its shows within its program aimed at providing opportunities for theatrical experiments, diversifying artistic visions, and enhancing the presence of theatre as a space for expression, dialogue, and raising questions related to humanity and society.
