Al-Fanatsah explained that the Jordanian Labor Law, under the amendments made in 2019, includes a definition of wage discrimination as inequality in pay for work of equal value without gender-based discrimination, while Article (53) stipulates penalties for employers in case of committing a violation related to wage discrimination between genders, with harsher penalties in case of repeated violations.
He added that the General Federation, in cooperation with relevant authorities and civil society institutions, continues its efforts to promote gender equality in labor rights, primarily wages, and to address the causes that contribute to the widening of the gender wage gap, particularly in sectors with a high participation of women, including the private education sector.
Al-Fanatsah pointed out that the labor unions under the umbrella of the Federation are working to integrate the principle of equal pay into collective bargaining processes and collective labor contracts that they conclude with employers in various economic establishments, noting that the material benefits and labor benefits included in these contracts apply to all workers in the establishment without discrimination based on gender.
He pointed out that wages form one of the most important pillars of the employment relationship and one of the fundamental rights of workers, affirming that addressing wage discrimination and enhancing justice in the work environment contribute to providing decent working conditions, increasing productivity, and supporting women's economic participation.
Al-Fanatsah called for continuing efforts to raise awareness and educate about the rights of working women, and to enhance the knowledge of workers about their rights guaranteed by national legislation and international standards, which contributes to reducing discriminatory practices and promoting justice and equality in the world of work.
