Knowledge of Rights is a Gateway to Strengthening the Voice of Workers and Female Workers and Enhancing Trade Union Participation

The General Federation of Trade Unions of Jordan, in cooperation with the International Labor Organization, within the second phase of the project 'Strengthening Trade Unions for a More Inclusive and Gender-Equal World', organized a specialized legal training aimed at enhancing workers' and female workers' knowledge of their rights, raising awareness of legal protection in the world of work, and encouraging active trade union participation.

The training focused on enhancing workers' and female workers' knowledge of their rights and their ability to access legal protection, conveying their voices and actively participating in trade union work and social dialogue. It addressed a number of issues directly related to the reality of workers and female workers in workplaces, including basic rights and obligations in Jordanian labor law, employment contracts, wages, working hours, leave, termination of service, unfair dismissal, alongside the protection provided by the Social Security Law, including work injuries, maternity, disability, and old age.

The training also covered the topic of violence and harassment in the world of work, its forms, protection mechanisms, and complaint procedures, and introduced the International Labor Organization Convention No. 190, in addition to the importance of trade union organization and membership, and the role of trade unions in protecting rights and enhancing the participation of women and men in trade union work.

The training was not limited to providing legal knowledge in a theoretical manner, but also included practical applications, real-life cases, and group exercises to analyze labor rights violations, with the aim of linking legal knowledge to the challenges and situations that workers and female workers may face in the workplace.

Khaled Al-Fanatsah, President of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Jordan, confirmed that the organization of this training comes within the context of the Federation's approach to expanding the scope of trade union and awareness work and reaching workers and female workers in their different workplaces and sectors, in line with the Federation's strategic and reform plan, which prioritizes empowering workers and female workers, enhancing legal protection, developing trade union capabilities, and expanding the membership base.

Al-Fanatsah said, 'Investing in legal awareness and trade union capabilities is an investment in the stability of labor relations and in building a more just, equal, and inclusive work environment,' noting that the Federation continues to work in partnership with the International Labor Organization and the Government of the Kingdom of Norway, and in cooperation with various national entities, to enhance the rights of workers and female workers and develop trade union work.

For her part, Amal Muafi, the Country Coordinator of the International Labor Organization in Jordan, emphasized the importance of partnership with the General Federation of Trade Unions of Jordan, pointing out that stronger trade union work begins with workers' and female workers' knowledge of their rights and their ability to convey their voices and actively participate in social dialogue.

For her part, Birgith Weisel, Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway in Jordan, emphasized the importance of cooperation and partnership in enhancing labor rights, noting that workers' and female workers' knowledge of their basic rights forms the basis for their protection and empowerment in the world of work, and that enhancing this knowledge and translating it into tangible impact requires an active partnership that brings together workers, trade unions, employers, national institutions, and international partners.

As part of the training program, the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority Board of Commissioners hosted the General Federation of Trade Unions of Jordan and participants at the Cultural Center affiliated with the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, where the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Engineer Adnan Al-Suwaeiir, delivered a speech in which he emphasized the importance of the complementarity of roles among various partner entities in supporting workers and female workers and enhancing their participation in the development process, noting the role played by national institutions in supporting the local community and enhancing employment and development opportunities in the Petra region.

He pointed to the importance of cooperation between entities concerned with labor and development issues, which contributes to supporting the work environment and enhancing the participation of women and youth, and benefiting from programs and initiatives aimed at developing their capabilities and enhancing their economic and social participation.

The program included a series of field visits to training centers, associations, and local initiatives led by women in Petra, with the participation of representatives of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Jordan, the International Labor Organization, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway.

During the visits, the delegation reviewed women's experiences in the fields of jewelry making, clay crafts, and food production, and listened to women about their experiences, opportunities, and challenges related to training, work, and the development of their economic activities.
