The United Nations General Assembly adopted last night the "Political Declaration on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response."
The resolution was supported by 153 member states, opposed by America, Israel, and Argentina, while New Zealand and Paraguay abstained, with the remaining member states absent.
According to the declaration, heads of state, government representatives, and their delegates express concern that the world remains insufficiently prepared and needs to strengthen the necessary capacities to prevent, prepare for, and mitigate the effects of future pandemics.
Heads of state and government emphasize that pandemics require global leadership, cooperation, solidarity, and multilateral commitment to implement consistent, rapid, and effective science-based measures, stressing the need to prioritize equity and respect for human rights.
It is noteworthy that the declaration was formulated following the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic, which claimed millions of lives and caused severe damage to health systems and the global economy.
