The works of the 2026 General Census of Population and Housing begin today, Thursday, October 1st, in various regions of the Kingdom, under the slogan "Our census for a better future", which is the seventh in the history of the Kingdom, with the participation of about 12,000 researchers and researchers, to collect and update data related to about 2.5 million households, within a process that continues until the end of the month.
The census is conducted to update accurate and recent data on the population, households, housing, and their characteristics and geographical distribution, which supports planning, decision-making, and directing projects and services according to the actual needs in various regions of the Kingdom.
The Director General of the Department of Statistics, the National Director of the Census, Dr. Haider Al-Fraihat, said that the field operations will cover about 24,000 statistical blocks and about one million buildings, while about 12,000 researchers and researchers will participate in the implementation of the census, including about 10,000 teachers and teachers from the Ministry of Education and 2,000 cadres from the Department and temporary researchers who have been trained for this purpose.
He added that the census process and the field visits carried out by the researchers are flexible, taking into account the times and circumstances of individuals and families. In case the household or one of its members is not present during the visit, they will be contacted again and visited at a later time, either by the same researcher or another researcher, to ensure the completion of the comprehensive count of all citizens' and residents' households.
Dr. Al-Fraihat confirmed that all data collected during the census are subject to confidentiality and legal protection, and are used only for statistical purposes in accordance with the applicable legislation, noting that researchers are provided with statistical identities that include a QR code that allows households to verify the identity of the researcher if they wish through the Sanad application.
He called on citizens and residents to cooperate with statistical researchers and provide them with accurate data, stressing that the quality of the information provided directly affects the accuracy of planning for future services and projects.
The census aims to provide an updated picture of the demographic, social, and housing reality in the Kingdom, which helps to determine the current and future needs of the population, and to direct resources, services, and projects to the areas and categories that need them.
The census results support planning for sectors that directly affect citizens' lives, primarily education, health, transportation, infrastructure, housing, and various services, as well as development purposes. They also contribute to determining the direction of urban and population expansion, improving the distribution of services, and enhancing their efficiency at the national and local levels, which enhances the ability of relevant authorities to develop policies, plans, and programs based on accurate and comprehensive data that reflect the demographic, social, and population reality in the Kingdom.
The questions do not include economic and living matters but are limited to demographic and social topics, and the census results are not limited to determining the population count but include data on demographic, social, educational, employment, and housing characteristics, which provides a comprehensive information base that helps government agencies, planners, and researchers to read the demographic and social reality and develop future plans based on reliable data.
The 2026 census employs an integrated technological system that covers the stages of preparation, enumeration, data collection, processing, verification, and monitoring of field operations and analysis of results.
The system includes tablet computers used by field researchers, smart electronic forms, linking with government records and databases, electronic verification and monitoring systems, geographic information systems, and a call center (toll-free number 117110), in addition to the use of artificial intelligence technologies to support verification, verification, and follow-up processes.
The census is implemented within the framework of a trend towards updating the statistical work system and the shift towards digital data, in line with the international standards and methodologies adopted in similar censuses, in accordance with the Population Censuses Guide for the years 2025-2030 issued by the United Nations.
It is also based on Article 4 of the General Statistics Law No. (8) of 2025, which stipulates the conduct of a general census of the population and housing at least once every ten years, and the same law guarantees the confidentiality of data and the protection of personal privacy.
