The Syrian Post Corporation announced on Thursday the resumption of the service of sending postal parcels from Syria to all countries in the world through the Universal Postal Union (UPU) network, after a long period of suspension of this type of international service.
The Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted the Director General of the Corporation, Emad al-Din Hamad, as saying that the service began on Thursday, in a step that reconnects Syrian mail with the international postal network.
Hamad explained that the resumption of sending parcels came after the success of the first phase, which was the operation of the service for receiving postal parcels coming to Syria from various countries around the world.
The receiving service was operated through the postal exchange office at Damascus International Airport, which represents the main connection point between the Syrian Post Corporation and foreign postal networks.
Hamad considered the new step to "end a long phase that witnessed the absence of the role of the post in connecting Syria to the world," and restores to the institution its role as an official outlet connecting citizens and economic sectors to the outside world.
He pointed out that the service will be provided according to international standards and at prices that he described as "competitive," allowing the sending and receiving of parcels through official postal channels.
He confirmed the readiness of the institution's centers and branches in the provinces, along with the international exchange center at Damascus International Airport, to receive outgoing and incoming postal shipments and parcels.
The Syrian Post Corporation had announced in June last year the reactivation of the service for receiving international postal parcels, to begin on July 1, through the postal exchange office at Damascus International Airport.
With the resumption of the sending service on Thursday, international postal parcel traffic through the institution is now available in both directions, from abroad to Syria, and from it to various countries around the world.
