The death toll of road security personnel in Syria rose to 4 on Tuesday, after unidentified individuals targeted their patrol in the countryside of Hama province, in the center of the country.
The Syrian "Al-Ekhbariya" channel quoted the Ministry of Interior spokesperson, Nour al-Din al-Baba, as saying: "With deep sadness and sorrow, we mourn the martyrdom of 4 of our brothers, the road security personnel, following the targeting of two of their patrols in the Hama countryside."
He added that "this crime will not deter us from continuing to pursue the criminals and bringing them to justice, but will rather increase our determination to perform our duty in maintaining the security of citizens and protecting lives."
Earlier on Tuesday, the Syrian News Agency "SANA" reported the "martyrdom of three road security personnel following the targeting of their patrol by unidentified individuals on the Salamiyah–Athriya road (in the eastern Hama countryside)."
The agency indicated that there was a mobilization of internal security forces in the area following the attack.
The agency did not provide additional details regarding the nature of the attack or the identity of its perpetrators.
The Salamiyah–Sheikh Hilal–Athriya road is considered one of the important axes in the Hama countryside, and it witnesses continuous movement of vehicles and trucks, according to the Syrian General Establishment for Road Transport.
Last May, the establishment announced the start of rehabilitation works for parts of the road, as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and enhance traffic safety.
Syrian authorities are seeking to establish security and stability throughout the country and pursue armed groups, in light of continuing security challenges, including sporadic attacks targeting security personnel.
