Stroke threatens young people: What are the causes?

Alexander Millerzanov, Deputy Executive Director of the Institute of Future Biophysics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, warned of the increasing number of strokes among young people, noting that this phenomenon represents a worrying global trend.

Rising incidence rates among young people

In an interview with the Russian website "Mail.ru," Millerzanov explained that data from American researchers indicate that the incidence of stroke in people aged 20 to 54 has nearly doubled over the past 27 years, despite a decrease in stroke diagnosis rates across various age groups.

He pointed out that this increase may be linked to several factors, most notably high blood pressure, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, and the use of psychoactive substances.

Unhealthy lifestyle is one of the most prominent risk factors

The expert emphasized that lifestyle plays a fundamental role in increasing the risk of stroke, explaining that advancements in diagnostic tools contribute to faster detection and treatment of cases, but do not prevent the occurrence of the injury itself.

Among the most prominent factors that may increase the risk of injury are:

Smoking and the use of psychoactive substances: due to their negative effects on the heart, blood vessels, and various body functions.

Unhealthy diet: as excessive consumption of foods rich in sugars and unhealthy fats may lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

High blood pressure and diabetes: which are among the most prominent risk factors associated with strokes.

Heart rhythm disorders: such as atrial fibrillation, which may increase the risk of blood clots forming and traveling to the brain.

He explained that the combination of these factors may increase the likelihood of stroke, even in people at a young age.

Awareness and prevention to reduce incidence

Millerzanov stressed the importance of promoting health awareness and encouraging the adoption of healthy lifestyles from childhood, confirming that prevention begins with daily habits, such as following a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and avoiding smoking and harmful substances.

He also recommended monitoring health indicators periodically, especially measuring blood pressure and heart rate, in addition to undergoing regular medical check-ups for early detection and management of risk factors.

Prevention and early detection remain the most important means to reduce the risk of stroke and its complications, including among the youth population.
