Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Engineer Adnan Al-Sawa'ir, emphasized that the project comes within the Authority's vision to upgrade infrastructure and services in the Petra region and improve the urban environment in a manner befitting Petra's status as a global tourist destination.
Al-Sawa'ir stated that the project aims to improve the visitor experience, organize vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and provide integrated facilities and services, in addition to creating a more organized environment for commercial activities and tourism services. He stressed that infrastructure development represents one of the fundamental pillars of the Authority's work to enhance the region's competitiveness and support the local economy.
He pointed out that the development works take into account the specificity of the Petra region and its tourism and environmental nature, and seek to achieve integration between infrastructure, the urban landscape, and the services provided to visitors and the local community, thereby enhancing the region's attractiveness and preserving its identity.
Al-Sawa'ir explained that the Authority continues to implement its development and service projects according to clear priorities, in a way that achieves a direct impact on the lives of the local community and the tourism sector. He noted that improving public facilities, organizing traffic, and developing spaces and service sites will support economic movement and stimulate commercial activities in the region.
The project includes completing the alternative road works for the tourist street, extending the public square (plaza) and the intersection with the tourist street, in addition to constructing parking lots, service facilities, surfaces, and landscaping works.
The alternative road is about 800 meters long and includes the construction of 71 shops beneath the road, with 37 shops having been completed in the first phase. Above the shops is a 10-meter-wide street, along with pedestrian walkways, rest areas, and sidewalks, in line with the region's specificity and tourism nature.
The project includes completing the extension of the public square by 140 meters, after about 90 meters were implemented in the first phase, while enhancing site coordination works, green spaces, and planting basins, in addition to implementing an intersection that connects the proposed parking lots with the tourist street and the alternative road.
The project consists of parking lots with a capacity of about 70 cars, with service facilities including 6 public restrooms for men and women and two restrooms designated for people with disabilities, in addition to site coordination works.
The Authority considered the Ad-Dara area development project an important step in the path of developing tourism infrastructure in the region, contributing to improving the visitor experience, organizing traffic, and providing a better environment for commercial activities and tourism services, thereby enhancing the local community's benefit from tourism activity.
