Parliamentary Speakership.. Understandings head toward resolution and the ballot box remains an option

Consultations among parliamentary blocs regarding the speakership of the House of Representatives are approaching a decisive stage, with expectations that the features of the understandings will become clear by Wednesday at the latest. This comes amid intensive contacts to bridge viewpoints and agree on candidates for leadership positions ahead of the opening of the third ordinary session on November 2nd, amid questions about the possibility of resolving the speakership through consensus or resorting to the ballot box.

An informed source told "Alrai" that the resolution of understandings between parliamentary blocs regarding the House speakership is expected to become clear by Wednesday at the latest, in light of the ongoing contacts and meetings between them, which aim to bridge viewpoints and reach consensus regarding the speakership of the House and the positions associated with the Permanent Office.

This movement comes in light of the existence of five parliamentary blocs: Al-Mithaq, Azm, Mubadara, the Union of Centrist Parties, and Al-Ummah, while eyes are turning to the nature of the alliances that will form during the coming period and the ability of the blocs to reach consensus regarding the speakership of the House and other positions in the Permanent Office.

In this context, the Mubadara bloc announced the nomination of MP Mustafa Al-Khasawneh for the speakership of the House of Representatives, while the Union of Centrist Parties bloc announced the nomination of MP Suleiman Al-Zaben for the same position.

The Azm bloc also nominated MP Dr. Ayman Abu Hanieh, and limited its candidacy to the position of First Deputy Speaker.

On the other hand, the names of MPs Majhem Al-Sqour and Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh, from the Al-Mithaq parliamentary bloc, are emerging among the names in the race for the speakership of the House.

Data indicate that the current and past period witnessed intensive meetings and contacts between the parliamentary blocs, both inside and outside the offices, with the aim of discussing opportunities for consensus on one or more candidates and determining their positions on the requirements related to the House speakership elections and the formation of the Permanent Office, in addition to the elections of parliamentary committees.

The Al-Mithaq bloc gains importance in the calculations of the parliamentary scene, given that it includes the largest number of MPs, which makes its position on candidates and potential understandings an influential factor in the course of the competition and in the opportunities for building alliances regarding resolving the elections.

It is expected that the blocs' consultations will focus on bridging viewpoints and coordinating positions, in light of the possibilities of competition between more than one candidate, and what may accompany this in terms of understandings related to the distribution of parliamentary positions and the arrangement of priorities during the coming period.

The election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the formation of the Permanent Office, and the election of committee chairs and members are among the parliamentary requirements that are renewed according to constitutional frameworks and the House's internal regulations, and they constitute an important milestone in organizing parliamentary work and determining its priorities during the parliamentary session.

With the continued movement between the parliamentary blocs, the results of the consultations and the expected understandings remain a decisive factor in drawing the features of the competition for the speakership of the House, in light of the multiple names proposed for the position, while the option of ballot boxes remains on the table to resolve the speakership.
