Palestinian educational institutions suspend operations on Wednesday in the West Bank

Palestinian educational institutions announced the suspension of operations on Wednesday, fearing tension and escalation in the field on the third anniversary of the start of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

Among the institutions that suspended the attendance of their students or converted them to remote learning are government and non-governmental schools and universities.

The Deanship of Student Affairs at An-Najah National University (non-governmental), in a statement, announced that the attendance of students on Wednesday "will be electronic, due to the prevailing conditions and in order to ensure the safety of students on the third anniversary of the start of the war on Gaza."

Due to the "current circumstances," the directorates of education and training in most areas of the West Bank announced the continuation of attendance on Tuesday instead of Wednesday "to ensure the safety of students."

As a result of the financial crisis facing the Palestinian Authority, government schools operate three days a week.

On Sunday, Israel announced a comprehensive closure of the crossings of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on October 5 and 7, coinciding with the anniversary of the events of October 7, 2023, according to the broadcasting authority, quoting Defense Minister Yisrael Katz.

On that day, the Hamas movement surprised Israel with an unprecedented attack on 11 military bases and 22 settlements adjacent to the Gaza Strip, resulting in the killing, injury, and capture of hundreds of Israelis.

Hamas said at the time that the attack came "to end the unjust siege on Gaza (since 2007) and to foil Israel's plans to liquidate the Palestinian cause and impose its sovereignty over Al-Aqsa Mosque."

Since the start of the war on the Gaza Strip on October 8, 2023, the Israeli army and settlers have escalated their attacks in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, including killings, arrests, displacement, demolition of homes, land leveling, and settlement expansion, according to Palestinian sources.
