Meteorology: Atmospheric instability continues and rainfall scope expands on Sunday

The Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) reported that the Kingdom will remain under the influence of atmospheric instability over the next three days, accompanied by scattered rain showers in various regions of the Kingdom. These may be heavy for short periods in some areas and accompanied by lightning, thunder, and occasional hail, which increases the possibility of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, especially in the south and east of the Kingdom.

The Kingdom remains under the influence of atmospheric instability today, Saturday, with moderate temperatures prevailing in most regions and relatively hot weather in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba, with clouds appearing at various altitudes.

Scattered rain showers are expected in parts of the eastern and southern regions, including the city of Aqaba, which may be heavy for short periods and accompanied by lightning, thunder, and occasional hail.

The probability of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas in the south and east of the Kingdom increases, especially during the afternoon hours, while winds will occasionally pick up, stirring dust in the Badia regions.

Chances for thundershowers continue during the night hours in parts of the eastern and southeastern regions.

Forecasts indicate an expansion in the scope of the atmospheric instability on Sunday, as scattered rain showers are expected in various regions of the Kingdom, including the city of Aqaba, which may be accompanied by thunder at times.

By the afternoon hours, the impact of the atmospheric instability is expected to deepen, and the chances of heavy rain for short periods will increase in parts of the southern and eastern regions, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, which increases the risk of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas in those regions.

Southeasterly winds are also expected to be active, with occasional strong gusts that may lead to dust and reduced horizontal visibility, especially in the Badia regions.

The impact of the atmospheric instability continues on Monday, with expected scattered rain showers in various regions of the Kingdom, which may be heavy at times and accompanied by thunder and hail.

During the night hours, the chances of rain will be concentrated in parts of the eastern and southeastern regions.

Current forecasts indicate a retreat in the impact of the atmospheric instability on Tuesday, with a slight drop in temperatures to become around their usual climatic averages for this time of year. Moderate autumn weather will prevail in most regions, and relatively hot weather in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba.

In light of the expected weather conditions, the JMD emphasized the need to pay attention to the risk of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas in the south and east of the Kingdom, especially on Saturday and Sunday. It advised staying away from valley streams and areas where rainwater collects, and not risking crossing roads that may experience flash flooding.

It also called for caution during thunderstorms, avoiding open and high places during lightning and thunder, and paying attention to the risk of slipping on roads experiencing rainfall, especially at the beginning of the precipitation. It also warned of reduced horizontal visibility due to dust in the Badia regions, and fog during the early morning hours in high mountain heights and parts of the Badia and plains.

The department confirmed that atmospheric instability during the autumn season may be characterized by spatial and temporal variation in the intensity of rainfall, as limited areas may witness heavy rain over a short period, while rainfall may be light or non-existent in other areas.

It stressed that the intensity of rainfall over a short period may lead to the formation of local flash floods, even if the weather condition is geographically limited in impact.

It indicated that it continues to monitor and analyze the latest outputs of numerical models, satellite imagery, and meteorological data around the clock, noting that forecasts related to atmospheric instability are subject to updates according to weather developments.

It called on citizens to follow weather bulletins and official warnings issued by the JMD and not to rely on unreliable information, in order to preserve their safety and property.
