Yesterday, the music of «Messiah» by the German composer George Frideric Handel resounded in an evening that combined art, music, and the memory of the place at the archaeological site of Mukawir.
The concert was organized by the European Union in Jordan under the patronage of HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, and in the presence of HRH Princess Rajwa bint Ali bin Nayef, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Imad Hijazeen, alongside the Italian Ambassador to Jordan, Zamporlini.
The evening gained its special significance from being held at the Mukawir site, one of the prominent archaeological and historical sites in Jordan, where classical international music met a location holding profound significance in the religious and historical memory of the region.
The concert comes in the context of preparations for the celebrations of the year 2030, which will witness the commemoration of the Year of Saint John the Baptist and the 2000th anniversary of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan River—an occasion expected to shed further light on the sites associated with these events in Jordan.
In this framework, Italy plays a major role in the efforts to rehabilitate the Mukawir site through a project implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in Amman in partnership with the University of Perugia, and with co-financing from the European Union and Italian Cooperation.
The project aims to enhance the site's presence and highlight its historical, cultural, and touristic value, thereby contributing to the development of the visitor experience and preparation for the milestones associated with the year 2030.
The choice of Handel's «Messiah» to bring the evening to life carried a special artistic and spiritual significance, as international music lent the historical site an exceptional atmosphere in a scene that reconnected the place with its memory through the language of art and music.
