Maintenance of an Old Pump Causes Ammonia Gas Leak in Aqaba

The Commissioner of Environmental Affairs and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, Nidal Al-Awran, said on Monday that the ammonia gas leak in the Aqaba Industrial Complex occurred during maintenance work on one of the old pumps or pressure devices.

Al-Awran added in statements to "Al-Mamlaka" that a previous accumulation of ammonia gas was present at the site, which led to a small amount of it leaking during the maintenance process.

He explained that the workers had taken initial public safety measures, but their proximity to the leak point resulted in some of them being exposed to suffocation.

He pointed out that the maintenance work was carried out by a Japanese company, while the pump is located within the boundaries of the industrial complex.

Al-Awran confirmed that the safety of the procedures followed will be verified in cooperation with the Governor of Aqaba and the relevant authorities, to ensure that there are no flaws and to benefit from any observations that may arise.
