Dr. Nidal Al-Awar, Commissioner of Environmental Affairs and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, said that work at Aqaba Port has returned to normal after controlling a limited ammonia gas leak that occurred during maintenance work on one of the old pumps in the industrial complex.
Al-Awar explained in a special statement to «Al-Rai» that the leak was technically controlled within minutes, while civil defense teams and relevant and specialized agencies dealt with the incident on the ground immediately after it occurred, confirming that the incident was limited and did not result in significant damage.
He added that 11 people suffered from mild to moderate cases of suffocation due to the leak, some of whom were transferred to the hospital to receive the necessary medical care, while the required measures were taken to deal with the situation and secure the site.
He pointed out that the leak occurred during maintenance work carried out by the Japanese company on one of the old pumps, due to a previous accumulation of ammonia gas at the site, which led to a limited amount of it leaking.
Al-Awar confirmed that the situation returned to normal within about an hour, and work resumed as usual, noting that the rapid response and control of the leak were achieved in record time.
