"Land Transport" discusses modernizing yellow taxis and regulating applications

The Land Transport Regulatory Commission held an executive coordination meeting today, Monday, chaired by its Director General, Engineer Riad Al-Kharabsheh, to discuss ways to develop yellow taxi services and improve working conditions for operators and drivers.

The meeting addressed a proposal to review instructions regarding the manufacturing year of vehicles allowed for entry during replacement modernization, and to study expanding the range of accepted models by going back three additional years, allowing the entry of 2020 model vehicles, which contributes to accelerating fleet modernization during 2026.

The Deputy Head of the Taxi Office Owners Syndicate, Mohammad Al-Hadid, emphasized the importance of accelerating the completion of procedures for issuing yellow taxi application instructions, due to their impact on facilitating passenger access to the service, reducing waiting times, increasing employment opportunities, improving service quality, and enhancing the sector's competitiveness within an organized framework that considers the rights of passengers, drivers, and operators.

For their part, the syndicate representatives pointed out that vehicles due for decommissioning are 2013 models, and that allowing them to be replaced with newer vehicles, within clear technical requirements, achieves improvements in safety, comfort, and operational efficiency, reduces maintenance and modernization expenses, and improves the financial return for the driver, owner, and the commission.

It was agreed to proceed with the procedures related to studying the proposal and amending the relevant instructions.

They praised the efforts of the official in charge of the applications file at the commission, Mohammad Al-Abdullah, emphasizing the importance of empowering him, strengthening the resources supporting his work, and intensifying oversight of smart transport applications to enhance compliance with licensing and permit requirements and improve the regulation of passenger transport services in the Kingdom.

The participants agreed to form a joint committee between the commission and the syndicate to follow up on the files raised and discuss topics with differing viewpoints, especially regarding transport modes competing with the yellow taxi service, including limousines, intercity transport, smart applications, and service taxis, to reach practical proposals that support fair competition, service integration, and improvement of the service provided to citizens.

The meeting was attended by the Director of the Communication Unit, Dr. Abla Washah, the Director of Passenger Affairs, Mutaz Al-Rousan, the Director of Studies, Lubna Abdel Hadi, the Head of the Taxi Committee, Mohammad Al-Ghunaim, and the Syndicate's Media Spokesperson, Muath Al-Sarisi.
