In a statement, the Jordan Environment Society commended the inclusion of the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, "Al-Maghtas," within the national network of protected areas and its declaration as a nature reserve, considering this decision an important step in protecting the site's religious, historical, and environmental heritage, and strengthening national efforts aimed at conserving biodiversity and natural resources.
The Society’s advisor and media spokesperson, journalist Nadia Al-Ananza, stated that including the site in the national network of protected areas reflects the importance of preserving sites of religious, historical, and environmental value, and emphasizes the necessity of integrating national efforts to protect these sites and preserve their natural components for future generations.
She pointed out that declaring Al-Maghtas a nature reserve contributes to raising awareness about the importance of environmental protection and encouraging responsible practices in managing tourist and religious sites, ensuring the preservation of their natural characteristics and cultural status, in addition to supporting sustainable eco-tourism and religious tourism.
She indicated that protecting protected areas requires cooperation between official institutions, environmental associations, and local communities through the implementation of environmental awareness and education programs, reducing practices that may affect natural resources, and enhancing citizen participation in preserving sites of national importance.
She emphasized that preserving sacred sites is inseparable from protecting nature, noting that Al-Maghtas represents a distinct historical and environmental value, which calls for continued work to protect its natural components, enhance the sustainable management of the site, and instill a culture of environmental responsibility among visitors and the local community.
She added that the Jordan Environment Society emphasizes the importance of supporting national initiatives aimed at expanding the scope of environmental protection and strengthening partnerships between relevant institutions, contributing to the preservation of the Kingdom's natural and cultural heritage and achieving a balance between environmental protection and the sustainable utilization of tourist and religious sites.
