Jordan Camel Racing Festival kicks off in Wadi Rum

The activities of the 6th Jordan Camel Racing and Nabati Poetry Festival kicked off yesterday at the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan track in the Disi area of Wadi Rum, under the patronage of Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, and organized by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, in cooperation with the Jordanian Camel Racing Committee.

The President of the Jordanian Camel Racing Committee, Ali Al-Masamra, said in press statements that the sixth edition of the festival comes as a continuation of efforts aimed at consolidating Jordan's position on the camel racing map, expanding the base of participation in its competitions, and providing an integrated experience for visitors that combines races with cultural and heritage events, thereby enhancing the status of Wadi Rum and Aqaba as destinations for tourism, sports, and heritage events.

He added that the festival represents a prominent milestone for celebrating authentic Arab heritage and strengthening the presence of camel racing as an important part of the history and cultural identity of the Jordanian Badia, in addition to introducing new generations to the customs and traditions associated with this heritage sport.

The festival program includes races for various camel categories, including Mafarid, Haqa'iq, Laqaya, Jatha'a, Thanaya, Hail, and Zamoul, according to classifications based on age and gender, and for distances ranging from two to six kilometers. The program also includes the 2nd International Camel Endurance World Championship with the participation of contestants and enthusiasts of this sport from inside and outside Jordan, in addition to a "most beautiful camel" competition.

Concurrently with the competitions, a group of activities will be held, including a heritage camel market, a folk heritage museum, a specialized scientific exhibition on camels, as well as artistic performances.

The festival also witnesses the holding of the Nabati Poetry Competition in its sixth edition at the Jordanian level and the fourth at the Arab level, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, in an event that combines the authenticity of camel racing with the deep-rooted Nabati poetry associated with Bedouin life and its cultural heritage.

The organization of the festival comes within the framework of efforts made to preserve Arab heritage, enhance its presence in the tourism and cultural scenes, introduce camel racing and its traditions, and attract its audience and those interested in it from Jordan, Arab countries, and the world.
