JFDA: 4 establishments monitored for violating gluten-free product requirements

The Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) announced that its specialized inspection and control teams have conducted a field survey to monitor compliance with the requirements for gluten-free products.

The Director General of the JFDA, Rana Obeidat, explained that the field survey has so far included the inspection of 61 establishments, including bakeries, restaurants, cafes, and shops, in addition to tracking licensing status and laboratory test results for samples. She added that the results of the study to date have shown that most licensed establishments are compliant with the approved requirements, while four violating establishments were identified and their production lines were suspended to rectify their status.

The JFDA called on all establishments working in the trade of gluten-free products to adhere to the approved legislation and instructions regarding obtaining the necessary licenses from the JFDA. It is prohibited to trade (manufacture, prepare, sell, or process) any product under the name or claim of "Gluten Free," or to advertise or offer it as such, without obtaining the necessary approval from the JFDA, in order to ensure the safety of individuals whose health conditions require the consumption of gluten-free products.

Regarding the possibility of cross-contamination during manufacturing or preparation stages, the JFDA reminded producers of these foods that ensuring a product is gluten-free is not limited to the ingredients of the final product alone, but requires adherence to the necessary requirements to prevent cross-contamination during manufacturing or preparation stages, including raw materials, surfaces, tools, equipment used, workers, and all practices related to product safety.

The JFDA confirmed that field surveys and inspection campaigns are ongoing to verify the extent of establishments' compliance with approved requirements, calling on citizens to ensure that an establishment has obtained the necessary approvals before purchasing or ordering products classified as "gluten-free," as establishments are required to display the approval issued by the JFDA clearly to the public.

Furthermore, the JFDA invited the public to contact it in case of any complaint, observation, or inquiry around the clock through the hotline at 117114 and via WhatsApp at 0795632000.
