Jordan's national judo team athlete, Houda Al-Washah, was crowned with the silver medal in the under 44 kg category on Sunday, during the fourth edition of the Youth Olympic Games hosted by the Senegalese capital, Dakar.
Al-Washah achieved a historic milestone for Jordanian judo, becoming the first Jordanian female athlete to win an Olympic medal in judo, either at the senior or youth Olympic Games.
Al-Washah began her competition by defeating Greek athlete Irene Papatheodorou in the round of 16, then overcame Poland's Julia Blaszczyk in the quarterfinals, continued her strong performance by defeating Venezuela's Rosalvik Aguilar in the semifinals, and advanced to the final match, where she lost to Turkey's Sima Yüksel, settling for the silver medal.
This medal marks Jordan's fourth in its history at the Youth Olympic Games, following Dana Heidar's silver and Yazen Al-Sadiq's bronze in Singapore 2010, and Zaid Mustafa's bronze in Buenos Aires 2018.
Swimming
National swimming team athlete Serena Mahyar opened her participation in the Games on Sunday in the 400-meter freestyle event, finishing with a time of 4:57.52 minutes, placing second in the first heat behind swimmer Kate Galatopoulos from the Cayman Islands, who recorded a time of 4:45.87 minutes.
Mahyar ranked eighteenth overall in the race.
Mahyar continues her participation in the Youth Olympic Games today, Monday, competing in the 100-meter freestyle event, where she will participate in the third heat at 1:05 PM Jordan time. Her national team teammate, Michael Al-War, begins his competition in the same event during the fifth heat at 1:38 PM Jordan time.
Opening Ceremony
The fourth edition of the Games officially opened two nights ago at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, Senegal, marking the first time an Olympic event is hosted on the African continent.
The opening ceremony featured a festive and vibrant atmosphere, including artistic and cultural performances showcasing Senegalese and African heritage, attended by delegations from participating nations.
The ceremony included the parade of nations, where Jordan's flag entered the stadium, carried by national swimming team athlete Michael Al-War, who had the honor of bearing the Jordanian flag at this Olympic event.
Jordan is participating in the Games with a delegation of 13 athletes—male and female—representing eight sports: taekwondo, boxing, swimming, judo, fencing, athletics, triathlon, and beach wrestling.
The Games feature 2,655 athletes representing 204 National Olympic Committees, along with the Olympic Refugee Foundation team, competing across 25 sports comprising 153 medal events, held in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.
