Riyadh International Airport extended the suspension of its operational activities on Sunday, following an attack targeting it that resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people and injured hundreds of others, according to a high-ranking aviation source speaking to Agence France-Presse.
Saudi authorities had announced on Saturday the temporary suspension of operational activities at the airport, before notifying the relevant authorities at dawn on Sunday of the extension of the suspension.
The source stated that the relevant authorities were notified at dawn of the extension of the suspension of operations at the airport, while a second source working in the supervision of flights heading to Riyadh confirmed the cessation of operations "until further notice."
The second source pointed out that available information indicates that some systems, including radar and communication devices, sustained damage, noting the necessity of assessing the condition of the airport runways as well.
For its part, the flight tracking platform "Flightradar24" reported in a statement via the "X" platform that the airport closure has been extended for an additional 24 hours, until 21:00 GMT on Sunday.
