Substitute Maximilian Beier scored a brilliant goal in the final minutes, leading Borussia Dortmund to the top of the German Football League "Bundesliga" with a 1-0 victory over their guests Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday at Signal Iduna Park in the seventh round.
Dortmund raised their tally to 17 points at the top of the table, three points ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich, who face Freiburg on Sunday in the same round, while Frankfurt's tally remained at 8 points in 13th place temporarily.
The hosts entered the match with an attacking surge in search of an early goal, and the first dangerous opportunity came in the 15th minute when Noah Atubolu, the Frankfurt goalkeeper, saved a powerful low shot from Guinean Serhou Guirassy.
Two minutes later, Guirassy missed another chance to take the lead after attempting to chip the ball over the goalkeeper, but it did not result in a goal, before Nnamdi Collins intervened to clear the ball and save his goal from a certain score after half an hour of play.
On the other hand, Gregor Kobel, the Dortmund goalkeeper, had to show his abilities in the 34th minute when he saved an attempt from the German of Moroccan descent, Younes Bentaleb, from close range, before shining again to clear a long-range shot from Algerian Farès Chaïbi that was heading for the top corner.
In the second half, which was slightly delayed due to fireworks, Dortmund continued their attacking attempts, and Guirassy almost opened the scoring after heading a precise cross, but the ball hit the crossbar, denying the hosts the lead.
Algerian Ramy Bensebaini and Norwegian Julian Ryerson missed two additional chances amidst Dortmund's continuous attempts to break the deadlock, at a time when it seemed the two teams were heading towards sharing the match points.
But substitute Beier had a different opinion, as he received a pass from Englishman Jobe Bellingham at the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a wonderful curling shot that settled in the top corner, which Atubolu was unable to save, igniting the stands of Signal Iduna Park and giving Dortmund a precious victory in the final minutes.
With this win, Dortmund temporarily topped the German league, putting pressure on Bayern Munich before their match against Freiburg, while Frankfurt returned from their trip to Dortmund empty-handed, despite holding on until the final moments.
