Confronting Iran's Arms from a Jordanian Perspective

These developments cannot be read solely as an internal Yemeni battle, as the Bab al-Mandab is a direct part of the regional and international security equation. Houthi control over areas near the strait gives the group—and thus Iran—the ability to threaten one of the most important maritime passages that negatively impacts Jordanian trade and the Suez Canal. Any prolonged disruption in this passage means higher transportation and insurance costs, rerouting of ships, and increased energy and commodity prices, harming the global, Arab, and Jordanian economies in particular.

Hence, Saudi support for the Yemeni government forces is understandable as a defense of the Kingdom's security and the security of the Red Sea region. It is clear that Riyadh will not back down from the option of ending Houthi control over the coast and the maritime passage.

Jordan, for its part, has clearly stated its support for Saudi Arabia, and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi emphasized the Kingdom's support for Yemeni legitimacy and its efforts to restore security and sovereignty. Amman also stressed its solidarity with Saudi Arabia in facing Houthi attacks.

The new equation states that dealing with Iran's arms in the region has become an Arab responsibility in the context of curbing Iran, while Washington and the international community directly confront Iran itself within the framework of the escalating conflict with it.

At this stage, Jordan should not view the decline of Iran's arms in the region as anything but an important opportunity. The stability of the Arab neighborhood directly affects the security and economy of the Kingdom. Therefore, the declared Jordanian position on Lebanon, Iraq, and the Saudi operation against the Houthis is a necessity with no escape.

However, stability alone is not enough. The opportunities resulting from the receding regional threats must be transformed into internal Jordanian immunity: a more self-reliant economy, diversification of markets, and enhancement of investment and production within a stable environment.

Jordan faces a very important opportunity, and what is required is to build a greater economic and political power, thus a greater ability to protect its interests and achieve future immunity against any upcoming disturbances.
