British Competition Authority moves to tighten oversight on Microsoft

The British newspaper The Times reported that the UK Competition and Markets Authority has proposed classifying Microsoft as a company with "strategic market status", in preparation for subjecting it to stricter regulatory oversight, in a bid to promote competition in the UK business software market.

The newspaper explained that the proposed classification may allow the authority to take measures that limit practices which could restrict customer choices, including programs like Word, Excel, and Teams within a single bundle, as well as assessing the ability of competing companies in the field of artificial intelligence to compete with Microsoft's Copilot tool.

The authority stressed that the classification does not mean the company has committed violations, but rather reflects its possession of established market influence. Evidence gathering is scheduled to continue over the coming months, with the final decision to be issued next February.
