Brent prices rise 4.5 percent and touch $110 per barrel

Oil prices jumped more than 4.5 percent to touch $110 per barrel, on Monday, driven by escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, and concerns about disruption of oil supplies through the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb.

Brent futures rose by 4.5 percent to about $109.5 per barrel, while U.S. crude futures rose by the same percentage to about $104.6, by 13:00 (GMT).

Brent recorded this price for the first time since May 18, which is reflected in fuel prices in many countries and raises inflation levels.

Last week, Brent crude exceeded $100 per barrel for the first time since July, with renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States and developments in the Red Sea.

The western coast of Yemen has seen a rapid field shift in recent days, with Houthi advances towards areas near the Strait of Bab al-Mandeb, one of the most important sea lanes in the world, in a development that may redraw the map of control over one of the most strategic locations in the region.

The new attacks and increasing risks around major oil routes in the Middle East have heightened fears of supply disruptions.

The United States has recently launched military attacks on sites in Iran, amid the impasse in negotiations between them due to disagreements over navigation in the strategic Strait of Hormuz for energy and commodity supplies.

Tehran responded by carrying out attacks against U.S. military installations in Arab countries, some of which resulted in civilian casualties and damage to civilian facilities.

On February 28, the United States and Israel began a war on Iran, which left more than 3,000 dead, according to Tehran, which responded with attacks that killed Americans and Israelis.
