Doctor Valery Litvinov warned that the risk of breast cancer in men often increases after the age of sixty, noting that the disease may develop silently for a long time without the appearance of clear symptoms, which may lead to its discovery at late stages.
The doctor explained that men, despite having much less breast tissue than women, are not immune to this type of cancer, as malignant tumors can arise in the ducts located behind the nipple.
Warning signs that should not be ignored
According to Litvinov, the infection may begin with the appearance of a lump in the breast or armpit area, or changes in the shape and size of the breast, in addition to nipple retraction or skin redness and scaling.
Signs that require attention also include nipple discharge, especially if it is accompanied by blood. The doctor stressed that the appearance of these symptoms does not necessarily mean cancer, but it requires a medical consultation to determine the cause, even in the absence of pain, as a malignant tumor may be painless.
Why is the disease discovered late in men?
Breast cancer in men accounts for less than 1% of total breast cancer cases, but the lack of awareness about the possibility of them being affected by it may lead many to delay seeking medical care, which increases the likelihood of discovering the disease at advanced stages.
How is breast cancer diagnosed in men?
When an infection is suspected, the doctor may recommend a mammogram or an ultrasound examination, in addition to further tests when needed. The final diagnosis is confirmed through a tissue biopsy.
Doctors emphasize that paying attention to unusual changes in the breast and not delaying medical examination helps in detecting the disease early, which increases the chances of receiving the appropriate treatment at the right time.
