Brazil turns their deficit into a win over Australia in a friendly match

Brazil turned their deficit into a win over host Australia 4-2 in an entertaining friendly match, in front of more than 52 thousand spectators in Brisbane last Tuesday.

The five-time world champions scored two goals in the late minutes of the second half to clinch the match against Australia, which has never beaten their prestigious rival more than once in their history.

Brazil needed a goal in the last minute to save a draw in the first match held in Townsville on Friday, but they performed better and emerged victorious in the second match of the friendly series.

Brazilian coach Carlo Ancelotti said “It was a difficult match, Australia is a very good team”.

He continued “It was a high-level match, they played with aggression and possess quality and great physical strength”.

Brazil opened the scoring in the third minute when defender Vanderson found space on the edge of the penalty area and shot a powerful volley that went past goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

The score could have been 2-0 after a few seconds, when Brazil recovered the ball immediately after the kickoff and launched towards the goal, but Beach made two brilliant saves and prevented the visitors from extending their lead.

Australia regained their balance after the quick start and began to exert some pressure.

They reaped the benefits in the 28th minute when a corner kick taken by Connor Metcalfe bounced off one of the Brazilian defenders, reaching Alessandro Cherchati who put it into the net.

Metcalfe gave Australia the lead 2-1 after five minutes, when he found himself in space outside the penalty area and fired a powerful shot into the top right corner.

However, Brazil equalized in the first half full of excitement, through their captain Raphinha from a penalty kick, after a reckless foul by Harry Souttar on Danilo.

Despite the friendly nature of the match, tension escalated in the second half when a rough tackle by Endrick on Souttar led to a clash between players of the two teams.

Brazil regained the initiative better and took the lead about 20 minutes before the end, when Endrick set up the ball inside the penalty area for Bruno Guimaraes, who did not miss with a left-footed shot.

Then they sealed the match when Vinicius Junior was fouled inside the penalty area by Nestory Irankunda, with the Real Madrid striker successfully converting the penalty into a goal.

Metcalfe said that Australia's performance in the two matches proves that they will be a serious contender for the Asian Cup title scheduled for next year in Saudi Arabia.

He added “We played two great matches against Brazil, one of the best teams. We proved that we are capable of playing against such teams, and I believe we have a very good chance”.
