Announcement of an electric train project between Al-Mahatta complex and Queen Alia Airport, 37 km long

The government intends to announce an investment project to construct a light electric train line approximately 37 kilometers long, connecting the Al-Mahatta area in Amman to Queen Alia International Airport, as part of the new investment opportunities it plans to present to European investors during the Jordan-Europe Investment Conference, scheduled to be held at the Dead Sea on November 19.

The project includes the construction of 4 stations and a train depot, the provision of trains, systems, and equipment necessary to operate the line, in addition to a proposal to build a 1.3-kilometer elevated extension towards the Al-Mahatta area, allowing for a direct connection with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network, buses, and taxis.

Operational estimates for the project indicate that the line could begin operations starting in 2031, with expectations that the number of passengers will reach 8 million annually in the first year, rising to 13 million passengers annually by 2055.

The project is being presented as an investment opportunity based on expectations of rising demand for public transport in the Middle East and North Africa region, as estimates, according to the ambitious growth scenario, indicate that demand for urban public transport, measured by passenger kilometers, will more than double by 2050.

Forecasts also indicate that investment needs in urban railways in the region will rise by more than 156%, according to the ambitious growth scenario, compared to the current ambition scenario.

In the context of plans to develop the public transport network in the capital, the Greater Amman Municipality had confirmed to "Al-Mamlaka" that it is preparing studies for a new proposed route starting from the Al-Mahatta complex, passing through Wadi Al-Rimam and the Middle East Circle towards the Customs Circle, then via Al-Hurriya Street reaching Airport Street, to connect with the overpass project expected to be built towards the Naour bridge.

The Municipality explained that part of the proposed route is linked to the completion of the bridge construction, while a traffic study is underway to evaluate the feasibility of implementing the project.

The proposal of the electric train project comes within a portfolio of more than 40 investment opportunities with a total value exceeding $15 billion, which the government intends to present during the Jordan-Europe Investment Conference, in key economic sectors including transport, infrastructure, logistics, energy, technology, and water.
