The 10-lap race witnessed numerous fluctuations, most notably the fall of Gresini Racing rider Alex Marquez, who started from pole position, while leading the competition on the third lap at Turn 13, forcing him to withdraw and lose his chance to compete for the win.
Japanese Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura had led most stages of the race before falling back to fourth place in the final laps, behind Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi, who finished the competition in third.
Although rain threatened the race flow, the lead riders managed to finish the competition before it intensified, after fluctuating weather conditions affected team decisions regarding changing motorcycles and using wet-weather tires.
Acosta expressed his happiness with the win, his second in sprint races this season, noting that he did not expect to perform well under the unstable weather conditions, but decided to take the risk and try to achieve a positive result, especially as he was not competing for the championship title.
He added that having Marc Marquez behind him, who is fighting for the title, made him realize the importance of the opportunity available to him to achieve a different result.
Martin's withdrawal strengthens Marc Marquez's position in the title fight
On the other hand, Spaniard Jorge Martin was unable to participate in the race after persistent pain in his wrist, following a fracture, prevented him from returning to the competition, admitting that his chances of winning the world championship title were practically over.
Marc Marquez's second-place finish helped widen the gap between him and Martin to 19 points, with expectations that the gap will increase during the main race scheduled for tomorrow.
Marc explained that he preferred to proceed with caution during the race, despite having the speed necessary to compete for first place, confirming that he did not want to take additional risks under the difficult conditions seen on the track.
He pointed out that riders far from the championship fight can take greater risks, while his focus was on finishing the race and collecting points, rather than engaging in risks that might affect his chances in the championship.
Accidents and weather fluctuations change the course of the competition
Alex Marquez had started strongly from pole position after outperforming his brother Marc in qualifying for the sprint race, and managed to take the lead at the first corner, while Marc dropped to fourth place after being overtaken by Ogura.
As the competition intensified between the riders, dark clouds began to gather over the track before the rain fell, leading Alex to crash while leading the race on the third lap, which gave Ogura the chance to advance to first place.
For his part, Australian Prima Pramac rider Jack Miller tried to take advantage of the weather changes by heading early to the pit lane, but he faced a problem after his team could not prepare his Yamaha backup motorcycle with the appropriate tires for wet tracks in the required time.
Most of the leading riders did not change their motorcycles, as they preferred to remain on the track, considering that the speed at which the race track dries did not necessitate a switch to rain tires.
Three laps from the finish, the struggle for the lead intensified between Ogura and Acosta before the Japanese rider lost his position, which allowed Marc Marquez to move up to second place, while Bezzecchi seized the opportunity to climb to third.
Bezzecchi said he was planning to manage the race calmly and save his energy for the final stages, but the rainfall changed his calculations, explaining that he began to gradually close in on the leaders, but could not catch them in time to challenge Marc for second place.
Bezzecchi occupies third place in the championship standings, 52 points behind Marc Marquez, while all eyes turn to the main race in Malaysia, which could bring new developments in the world title fight.
