A perfect end for Verstappen.. and Antonelli moves further ahead in the lead

Dutch Red Bull driver Max Verstappen completed a perfect weekend after winning the Singapore Grand Prix for Formula One for the first time yesterday on the "Marina Bay Street" circuit, while Italian Kimi Antonelli moved further and further away from his Mercedes teammate, British George Russell, in the lead by finishing third.

After securing first place in the short "sprint" race on Saturday, which he also started from the first line, Verstappen continued his brilliance and achieved his second consecutive victory.

This achievement in the seventeenth round (out of 23) was striking on a track where the Dutchman had never won or even started from the lead in nine previous attempts, since his debut with the Toro Rosso team in 2015.

Verstappen withstood an early attack from Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), before proving his superiority in terms of speed during the rest of the race, which consisted of 62 laps.

The Singapore race is one of the most physically and mentally exhausting races on the Formula One calendar, in light of the constant threat of the harsh concrete walls that surround the street circuit.

High temperatures and humidity can also cause drivers to lose three kilograms or more of fluids, during a race that often extends to the maximum allowed time of two hours.

Leclerc finished second, while Antonelli completed the podium by finishing third, allowing him to move further ahead in the overall standings by a margin of 100 points and two points over his Mercedes teammate, British pursuer George Russell, who finished ninth after starting from the nineteenth position due to a change in the power unit of his car.

British McLaren driver Lando Norris came in fourth, ahead of his Australian teammate Oscar Piastri, followed by British Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton.

New Zealander Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) finished seventh, followed by German Nico Hülkenberg (Audi) and Russell (Mercedes) and French Isack Hadjar (Red Bull).

Leclerc, starting from second place, tried to surprise Verstappen at the start of the race, but the latter managed with great difficulty to counter him at the first turn.

Hamilton maintained third place despite using medium tires, unlike his rivals who used soft tires, followed by Antonelli, Norris, and Piastri, leaving the ranking of the top six drivers unchanged.

Leclerc stayed close to Verstappen until the car of Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi) stopped on the straight section of the start-finish line due to a mechanical problem, which activated the virtual safety car, but no driver entered to replace the tires due to the possibility that the Audi would obstruct the entrance to the pit lane.

Hamilton was the first driver to enter the pit area, to use the medium tire after starting with the soft one.

Antonelli, in turn, replaced his soft tires with medium-hardness ones on the twenty-third lap, followed by Leclerc on the next lap, returning to the track with a slight lead over his Ferrari teammate, who was not at all satisfied with staying behind him.

After Verstappen replaced his tires and returned to first place, the virtual safety car was activated on the thirty-ninth lap due to a problem with the Canadian Lance Stroll's car (Aston Martin), so Leclerc and Antonelli took the opportunity to switch again from medium-hardness tires to soft ones, but Hamilton remarkably chose to stay on the track using used soft tires.
