Antonelli extends his lead further with his eighth win

Mercedes' Italian driver Kimi Antonelli extended his lead at the top of the overall standings ahead of his British teammate George Russell, after winning the Spanish Grand Prix for Formula 1, which was held for the first time at the Madrid circuit, achieving his second consecutive victory and the eighth in 14 rounds so far.

After starting from second place behind the defending champion, McLaren's British driver Lando Norris, Antonelli finished yesterday's Sunday race, which spanned 57 laps, in the lead ahead of Red Bull's Dutch driver Max Verstappen and Norris respectively, while Russell came in fifth place behind Ferrari's driver Charles Leclerc of Monaco.

The victory by the 20 -year-old in the first race at the Madrid circuit comes a week after his achievement at the Monza circuit among his home fans, when he started from 19th place on his way to becoming the first Italian to win at this circuit since 1966.

The Italian finished the Spanish race ahead by 4.351 seconds ahead of Verstappen, who withstood massive pressure from Norris in the final laps, leaving third place to the defending champion who lagged behind the leader by 5.089 seconds.

Antonelli raised his tally at the top to 292 points, leading by 81 points over his second-placed teammate Russell (211), while Ferrari's British driver Lewis Hamilton stayed at 191 in third place after being forced to retire early from Sunday's race due to a brake problem.
