In a blog post, Anthropic stated that the fund will grant it "greater flexibility and a broader scope" to pursue its mission through new means, which may include making significant donations to traditional charitable organizations or providing direct financial assistance to specific population groups.
The company noted that the shifts the labor market may witness due to the development of artificial intelligence represent one of the challenges associated with its mission. It pointed out that it has already pledged $200 million to study the effects of this technology, but the acceleration of its development may require, as it put it, a "bolder approach" in dealing with its repercussions.
The establishment of the fund comes within the framework of the company's efforts to provide broader tools to support public benefit initiatives, in parallel with the rapid developments in the artificial intelligence sector.
Anthropic was founded by its CEO Dario Amodei and five other co-founders. Since its inception, it has adopted the public benefit corporation model, a legal framework that allows for-profit companies to balance generating financial returns with considering social goals and the public interest.
By pledging to allocate a portion of its shares to the new fund, the company seeks to link part of its future market value to funding initiatives that serve society, while allowing room to expand these initiatives in tandem with the growth of its share value.
