The Mujib pumped-storage hydroelectricity project enhances the Kingdom's energy security by providing a capacity of 450 MW for up to seven hours, supporting the stability of the electrical system, increasing its ability to integrate renewable energy, and enhancing the flexibility of electricity demand management.
In statements to "Alrai", the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said that the project is considered one of the most prominent strategic generation projects in the Kingdom, and falls within the strategic energy plan prepared by the Ministry, with the aim of developing the energy sector and enhancing the security of electricity supply, in line with demand growth and supporting the expansion of renewable energy sources.
The Ministry added that the project allows for electricity storage during periods of low demand and re-pumping it into the grid when demand rises, contributing to enhancing the stability of the electrical system and increasing the ability to utilize renewable energy.
The total capacity of the project is 450 MW, distributed over two units, each with a capacity of 225 MW, while the storage duration reaches seven hours.
The project operates according to a closed-loop system, through two water reservoirs, upper and lower, separate from the Mujib Dam. The amount of water required to fill the two reservoirs is about 2.8 million cubic meters, filled once, provided that the water quantities lost annually due to evaporation, estimated at about 660 thousand cubic meters, are compensated.
The Ministry confirmed that the project will contribute to enhancing the flexibility of the electrical system, increasing its ability to integrate renewable energy, and improving energy security by providing the ability to store electricity and use it when needed, supporting the sustainability of the energy sector in the Kingdom.
Regarding the executive steps, the Ministry of Investment issued a request for qualification for companies wishing to participate in the project on Thursday, October 15, 2026, while Monday, January 18, 2027, at 12:00 PM, was set as the deadline for submitting qualification applications.
The project comes within the framework of the trend towards developing energy storage solutions, which enhances the flexibility of the electrical grid, supports the expansion of renewable energy projects, and contributes to meeting the Kingdom's future electricity needs.
